Istanbul named as world’s most connected airport in 2024 |
August 20, 2024 – Istanbul has been recognized as the world’s most connected airport for 2024, according to aviation data analyst Cirium. The airport in Turkey’s largest city leads the list with service to 309 destinations, surpassing Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle, which rank second and third, respectively, with 296 and 282 routes.
Cirium's research for the first half of 2024 highlights Istanbul’s dominance in global connectivity. Amsterdam Schiphol and Chicago O'Hare tied for fourth place, each serving 270 destinations. Rome Fiumicino is the only other European airport in the top 10, coming in at sixth with 234 destinations.
The United Kingdom's airports did not make it into the top 10 this year. London Heathrow fell from eighth place in 2023 to 12th in 2024, offering 221 destinations. London Gatwick, with 218 destinations, narrowly edged out Heathrow. Other notable airports on the list include Madrid, Munich, and Barcelona.
Cirium’s data reveals that European airports dominate the top 20, with 10 from the region. China and the United States each have four airports in the top 20, while Dubai International and Jeddah represent the Middle East with two entries.
