Hamas's attacks on Israeli communities on October 7 resulted in at least 1,200 deaths. |
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has urged the Cabinet to approve a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, emphasizing the urgent need to bring hostages back home following the October 7 attacks. Herzog acknowledged the state's failure to prevent the attacks and stressed that this ceasefire is a critical step toward rectifying the situation.
The deal, which is set to be presented to the Cabinet, would release 33 hostages initially, with further negotiations for the remaining captives to occur in a later phase if the ceasefire holds. While some critics worry that the remaining hostages might be held indefinitely, Herzog emphasized the moral obligation to free all individuals, stating that Israeli society is stronger than it seems and the decision must be clear: "We save them. We free them. We bring them home urgently."
Herzog described the sacrifices made by soldiers since October 7 and called the current opportunity a critical moment for the nation. The deal would come with significant challenges and painful moments, but Herzog expressed his belief in the country's resolve to heal its wounds by bringing its citizens back home.
